E-learning Course:
All About U Status for Crime Victims
September 7 – September 28, 2017
Presented by:
U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), in partnership with Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC)
This three-week training will review the fundamentals of obtaining U nonimmigrant status for victims of certain crimes, as well as focus in on cutting edge or developing topics related to U visa eligibility and related benefits for family members. Advocates who have previous training or experience with U status cases will have an opportunity to learn about new legal developments, consider strategic issues for applicants and family members, and strengthen their ability to prepare successful applications for U status and subsequent adjustment of status. Topics covered will include qualifying crimes; waivers of inadmissibility; advanced issues related to derivative beneficiaries; adjustment of status; the I-929 application for other family members; travel for U grantees and those on the waiting list; and the impact of the annual cap on U status approvals.
The course starts on Thursday, September 7 with access to the e-learning course website and a live webinar at 12:00 pm EDT providing an overview of U status eligibility. Each of the following three weeks of the course addresses specific issues related to U status, with related reading assignments, exercises and quizzes. This coursework is interactive, with opportunities for online discussion among students, and between the students and the instructors. Each week of the course concludes with a live 90-minute webinar, conducted on consecutive Thursdays at 12:00 pm EDT, where the course instructors will review and discuss the course content for that week. Each live webinar is recorded and posted on the course website after the webinar is conducted. Although we encourage participants to attend the live webinars each week, you will be able to listen to and view a recording of any webinar you are unable to attend whenever you choose to do so.
The instructors for this course are CLINIC attorneys Sarah Bronstein and Susan Schreiber. For questions about the course content, please contact Sarah Bronstein.
Course Completion Requirements:
Course participants will receive a course completion certificate if they (a) attend or view recordings of all four course webinars and (b) complete the three required course activities. You have up to two weeks after the last live webinar in the course to meet these requirements.
