COVID-19 Resources for National Violence Prevention Programs

ALSO continues to respond to COVID-19 by providing timely resources to grantees of Office on Violence Against Women-funded projects that focus on responses to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.

Consolidated Youth and Engaging Men Program

Meanwhile, the Consolidated Youth and Engaging Men (CYEM) Program also continues to adapt to current realities. For example, the program has compiled a COVID-19 Resource Guide specific to its grantees that is available on its portal here

The CYEM TA Team also moved their previously scheduled Spring meeting to a virtual platform. The Spring webinar series for grantees has also been expanded and covers a range of topics. Titles include “Trauma’s Effects on Young and Adolescent Minds” and “Spotlight on Social and Emotional Learning.” The CYEM TA Team is also building out a virtual training series for Fall of this year. In addition, the CYEM TA Team had offered grantees two virtual “TA Thursdays” a month, which allowed CYEM grantees an opportunity to connect with each other and receive guidance from their TA team for the initial COVID-19 crisis period. These events have received such positive feedback that they will be a permanent fixture for the rest of the year.

“We are seeing that people really want to be connected and hear what others are doing to continue to offer services to survivors during this time,” says Antonella Santostefano. Program Manager for the CYEM Program.

Another key development is that the CYEM program is in the process of creating and updating a new website that it hopes to share with the public and current grantees in the upcoming months.

STOP Technical Assistance Resource Project

ALSO’s STAAR Project assists all 56 U.S. states and territories by consulting with administrators of the Office on Violence Against Women’s STOP Formula Grant to address the needs of victims. The Project reacted quickly to emerging needs of grantees at this time by creating a national videoconference clinic for administrators to ask questions about and share challenges. The clinic is currently held every two weeks.

Sometimes, added ALSO Program Specialist Myasar Ihmud, an adjustment in how information is delivered can make a difference to grantees. One example is that ALSO adjusted the length of a current webinar from 90 minutes to 60 minutes. ”It may seem like a small change, but for administrators, this will make it easier to attend,” she says.

In addition, ALSO records webinars and posts them on its website, making them easy to watch at a later date. One example is a recent webinar on human trafficking that mentions how COVID-19 is impacting victims.

Meanwhile, the STAAR Project has also gathered specific  resources for STOP administrators to help provide guidance relevant to their work and issues raised by subgrantees.

Underserved Technical Assistance Project

The Underserved Technical Assistance Project continues to collaborate with other national technical assistance providers in relation to COVID-19. Earlier this month, the project hosted a webinar presented by the National Network to End Violence (NNEDV) that was relevant to the COVID-19 era. Topics included confidentiality, privacy, and use of technology in relation to providing services to survivors.

Meanwhile, the Underserved Technical Assistance Project offers resources for grantees that include guidance from the Office on Violence Against Women, culturally-and-population-specific resources, and resources on organizational preparedness and adaptation to COVID-19 as well as self-care and wellness.
